Fridays with Mr. Milk - They Were Wrong

A few of my friends told me that living with someone is a compromise.

Isn't life all about compromises anyway? So why the negative attitude towards cohabitation?

I'm happy to report that it's been 229 days since Chocolate Lover and I moved in together. That's approximately 7.5 months, which is 1.5 month longer than the turning point most of my friends warned me about. See, they said "wait until 6 months go by and you'll see!" They warned me of troubles stemming from incompatibilities that we never knew existed, and unpredictable  emotional roller-coaster rides I wouldn't even begin to fathom.

Ahem... you were wrong!

Living with CL has been the best thing I've ever done. After 5 years of long distance, and a combined 60 trips to and from San Francisco and Vancouver, I think the fact that she likes toothpaste in a tube whereas I like it in a squeezable container, and that she wants to go on a two-week cleansing diet with me that is driving my manly eating habits ballistic, is the least of my concerns! The fact is that we can talk all afternoon long and not have to worry about the line disconnecting, or listen to my complaints that my ear is getting too warm from holding the telephone or that my bluetooth battery is dying. The fact is that we can cuddle and be close to each other for as long as we want and shut off everyone else who causes a stir in our lives.

The fact is, they were wrong. And I am looking forward to tons more!

Until next Friday, this is Mr. Milk signing off.

Great post! People “warned” us, too, but they were wrong! I do think a lot of people move in together too soon, before knowing one another very well, and that is where a lot of the incompatibilities stem from. But in our case, it’s been one of the best decisions we’ve made!

Yay, this post is perfect for me to hear right now - there is a strong chance my fiance and I might be moving in together next month. I'm looking forward to it, but am a little nervous. Thanks for this post!

Awwww so sweet! I totally agree with you.
I had lived with boyfriends before and it was much like your friends described, but after a year and half cohab with my fiancé, I am experiencing none of those old feelings. I like to think it comes along with finding the right one. :)

No one warned us, but I had always been scared of the people who live together before marriage are more likely to split up rumor. It was definitely an adjustment period but I think we have it pretty good. And if you think a 2 week cleansing diet is bad, my poor fiancee had to convert to vegetarianism when we moved it together. Well, he didn't have to, but it saves a lot of money to not have to buy two totally different grocery lists of food. Congrats on making it 7.5 months!

Conventional "wisdom" tends to not fit most people, I think. I can't wait to live with my guy! I will welcome tiffs about whiskers in the sink and who took the trash out last over the too-hot-on-the-ear phone symdrome!

How cute! I got the same warning and here I am 2 years later happily cohabitating! Just yesterday I said outloud how I loved that I needed a hug and just had to walk over to the couch to my honey!! =D Happy Weekend.

Stopping by from SITS, couldn't resist your blog title as a fellow chocoholic. Glad I did, really cool post - I love that Mr. Milk is part of the blog and to hear his sweet thoughts.

I've been married almost 5 years so, from the other side of the pond I can only tell you, jump on in. It's great out here (even though the waters do get choppy!)

Love the post. Been cohabitating for 16 months now, and didn't really see my BF for the person he was until the 9-10 month period. However, I truly discovered things I never knew about him around 14 months, which I thought I already knew everything. I guess we constantly learn more as time goes on, and learn to love that person more...(hopefully) flaws included.

good post. for many people it can be hard to live with anyone. some people are just too used to living on their own and are just too stuck in their ways and dont want to compromise. its not hard to compromise when living with someone. just discuss the living situation with the person you're going to live with before moving in.

Yay!

If you can't live together before the wedding, how will you live together after?

after living with Mike for a few years now i have to say, if you can't be great roomates how can you be a happy family? we have so much fun doing the little things around the house from making breakfast to making the bed, we laugh together we dance around like idiots, we watch bad TV and swear to each other we won't tell our friends. As far as i'm concerned it's the ultimate test of compatibility and solidified the fact that we wanted to be married.

Aw, thanks for sharing your wonderful thoughts! CL is so lucky to have you (and you her). I love that you proved your friends wrong. And I fully agree about my ear getting warm from holding the phone up for so long...can't wait til I don't have to call Mr Fix It to tell him about my day.

I think it's absolutely necessary to live with a potential spouse before tying the knot. How else would you know you love absolutely everything about them?
