Friday's with Mr. Milk - The Wedding Car

After attending a wedding fair in Vancouver I am now inandated with emails from tons of wedding vendors, especially limousine services. As I received another email today, I thought I'd pick your fine people's brains on the subject of transporting yourself to the wedding.

I've seen everything from antique cars, to insanely large limos, to tiny smart cars or mini coopers, to Ferraris transporting brides and grooms after the ceremony. I can see why people would like antique cars. There's something classy about them that suits the grandiose texture of a wedding and adds a little romance to an otherwise mandane task. I can see why a young couple would make a statement by driving in their mini Cooper. Perhaps they are environmentalists or just outspokenly 'modest' about their preferences. I can also see why someone would take the opportunity to rent an exotic car; afterall, what's another $1,000 to rent a Ferrari for the day when there are so many other expenses to worry about?

What I'm having difficulty appreciating is the massive, prom dance limousines that seem like they are made for screaming teenagers with beer in one hand while the other is used to moon bystanders. Not cool. What's the point of driving in a 12-passenger Escalade limo anyway?  Not to be critical of anyone who likes that kind of thing, I guess it just ain't my cup of tea. Not to mention that in Cyprus I'm sure limos of that size would have a tough time getting around all the round-abouts (traffic circles).

As I type this I realize that the church and the reception are at the same venue, and that we are spending the night there too. Which means we won't be driving away together...

So what do you feel is a cool vehicle to use for your wedding? Any unique ideas out there?

Until next Friday, this is Mr. Milk signing off.

I don't know what it is like over there, but I emailed a bunch of auto clubs (people who put on antique car shows) and found someone who would drive us for free, just because he likes to drive his car. We might, however, rent a party bus if we strike it rich.

We are getting a limo but mainly because I know our guests won't see us leave or arrive in it. Otherwise we totally would have gone with something cooler...I had my eye on a pink Rolls Royce!!

We're having a huge problem with this! We are getting married about 2 miles from the hotel and we can't figure out how to get home. I am very against drinking & driving so we don't want the Mr. behind the wheel (I want him to enjoy the wedding) but we can't find anything that fits in our budget that offers a chauffeur :( I love the antique car idea though! If someone would drive us for free we'd be glad to hop in! :)

Getting a limo actually sounds pretty cool to me because I never did the whole rent-a-limo-for-the-prom thing, and haven't really ridden in one before. And they're more practical for transporting the whole bridal party to the wedding.

However, S and I will not be hiring limos or any special transportation on the big day. The hotel is five minutes from the reception/ceremony venue, and my parents have two cars, one of which we'll be borrowing.

My brother in law was desperate to hire a ferrari, however the point on his licence from a speeding conviction put paid to that. They got antique cars instead - please note that these tend not to come with heaters so beginning of April in England was very cold!

To save money, we’re going to be renting a black car or van for the day, which our best man will drive. I guess this just isn’t a splurge-worthy area for us. But I do think that renting a classic car would be a lot of fun!

We haven't put a ton of thought into this yet. Our ceremony and reception venues are the same, but they are not within walking distance to any hotels. It would be cool to make a "grand exit" but I'm not sure it's worth the cost. I'll talk to the fiance about it this weekend and see how he feels!

I am all about the antique cars. Our wedding and reception were in the same place so we did not bother, but I sure wish we had!

One of Ryan's friends rented a party bus, it was a lot of fun! We'll be driving our own vehicles, I might even wash my car for the occasion! I'm not a fan of the big limos, but I guess for exceptionally large wedding parties they are necessary.

I know a friend who had a horse drawn carriage which was pretty neat!

It seems like every wedding I have been to recently has had their bridal party transported by a fancy rented van. I don't think I've seen a limo used since my dad's second wedding when I was 12.

In our case, we are getting married on a resort...the same one we are staying at prior to the wedding and will be honeymooning at after. I'm hoping we can obtain a golf car to drive around in. Preferably chauffeured by one of the Sesame Street characters they have there to entertain the children.

(I'm not entirely joking.)

Great blog, Mr. Milk!

we're trying to secure a shuttle bus from the hotel to the venue -where the ceremony and the reception will take place - and then back to the hotel. i haven't decided if we should rent a limo for the bridal party on the way there, and then maybe we'll all take the shuttle on the way back?

VW bus. We love them! We just need to find someone who rents them.

I completely understand the huge SUV rentals (its how we do it in the south). It is just so massively big that the only occasion that warrants it is prom or weddings. Everyone can fit inside too :)

I do love classic cars. But for us cars were somewhere we could cut $$$. We've hired two mini buses to shuttle us all around. Not glamorous, but practical!

Mr Fix It just told me that he wanted to spend the $1,000 on an exotic car as a surprise for me. But to me, it is an unnecessary expense. Especially since I have to be at the venue at 8 in the morning and he won't get there til about 2 pm or so. Then we're staying at a hotel that's about 5 minutes away and driving to his house with a car full of junk in the morning. So there's really no need or time for a limo, exotic car, porsche, whatever. Honestly, the only good thing about those limos is if you are transporting a huge wedding party together to and from the event. But we will have family and wedding party members all showing up at different times of the day for photos and prep and such.

I've usually just seen limmo's but a trend I've noticed is Wedding buses... more commonly for the wedding party (with bride and groom in limo in front) to truck everyone all together from the church to where the photos are being done and then to the reception hall. The one's I've seen have been decked out refurbished city buses.

We are using a San Francisco style trolley to get us and the bridal party to the church and the reception. For our grand exit we are using a horse and carriage with a driver dressed to the nines in a top hat and coat with tails! Super cheesy I know, but it's been my dream since I was a little girl to leave my wedding in a Cinderella like carriage :-)

We drove away in a decorated Toyota. I couldn't figure out how to get all we needed to take on the honeymoon into a different vehicle than the one I drove to the church in.

We are getting married outside on a river and we are also taking photos there after we get married. So instead of renting a 'get away car' to drive around the block and wait for guests to leave, we're getting away on a pontoon boat! It just so happens that one of our friends lives just a little bit up the river who are letting us use and decorate their boat.

My fiance drives a 78 VW Bus...if it makes it to Flagstaff from Seattle, that's what we're driving off in!!
