Friday's with Mr. Milk - Going Home for Christmas: A Rant

In 10 days we are going to Cyprus for the Christmas holidays. We haven't gone back for the holidays for three years now, so the whole trip comes with more hype than usual. See, I'm torn when it comes to spending the holidays with family. It's not that I don't want to, or that I don't enjoy it.... I guess no matter what I do, I always seem to find myself returning to Canada in desperate need of another holiday!

This year there's an additional stress factor. You guessed it! The wedding!

There's something to be said about living far, far away from immediate family. Although I love the comforting feeling of having lots of people who care about you around, the downside is the incredible amount of energy it takes to see everyone and to please everyone's curiosity of the ins and outs of your private life. The key word is "private" (which by the way does not exist in the Greek language!).

Oh, back to the whole "added stress" for this year. How about the fact that we now have TWO families and that part of the holidays will be spent with BOTH at THE SAME TIME?

About a month away from our trip, I start getting excited. Not for the same reasons that excited me when I was a kid: the plane, the experience of travelling, the massive airports... No sir! I got plenty of air miles to ensure I never get excited about being on a plane again! My excitement now comes from reminiscing the homey smells, the Christmas love that you can just feel in the air when you are around family, and maybe a bit of the cool hype that comes with people's excitement to see you after so long.

And cuuuuut! The excitement ends 2 days after we land in Cyprus and the feeling of what, wedding, how, wedding, who, wedding, how much, wedding, wedding, wedding, comes back!

Ok.
Breath.
Everything is going to be oooookaaaayyy.

Until next Friday, this is Mr. Milk signing off.

Hang in there Mr. Milk...Sounds like a typical Christmas...PLUS wedding questions. Do what I do...when it gets to be a bit much, go in a room, lock the door, and read a good book, or listen to music- but DON'T answer the door...Or in your case, walk on the beach, go for a coffee in one of those nice outdoor cafe's...Just give yourself a breather...You deserve it. (This goes for chocolate lover too!)

Happy Holidays! You can make it!

Hope you guys have an awesome time!

And can you let Chocolate lover know that I totally confused everyone with todays post over on my blog. We freaked Mr B out yesterday, with Miss P's arrival.
The caterer actually sent me that email today. Yep, no kidding.

I am trying not to freak out. Melt down imminent!

Love the fact that there is no word for 'private' in Greek! I think the holidays are always the same... me and the OH don't live too far from our families but we both have a lot of relatives - and trying to get round everyone can be a bit more pain than pleasure... especially when sometimes you'd just like to be at home with pjs on watching movies ;)

Just keep breathing, and remember...when it's all over, you get to go home. To the place where your families aren't. And then you can go ahhhhhhh, this is what peace and quiet feels like.

That's what I always tell myself, anyway.

One of my best friends is Greek and you're right, "private" does not exist in the Greek language (maybe Ancient Greek, though?) I lived with her for 2 years and her mother knew every single thing the both of us did.

Anyway, I think we all have that stressful feeling around the holidays. And with a wedding added in, and everyone wanting to know every.single.detail., it's hard. If nothing else, lock yourself in the bathroom for 10 minutes :)

You just described my Thanksgiving experience with Jason's family. Because it's simply not natural to go from spending zero time to 24-7 time with people who you love but who drive you crazy in extended doses (and they feel the same way about you too, I've found.) But it's great, and give yourselves a morning or two alone or a night out by yourselves and you'll manage the stress and the love. (I also recommend a lot of sleep when you get home. That helps too.)

I have never lived away from my family so I can not even imagine what you are describing. However, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and that you enjoy your time spent with family. Over the last couple of years, several of my very close family members have passed away and things are no longer quite the same at Christmastime. So, be sure to treasure these good times even though it is a bit stressful. Things change so quickly as you start to get older.

HAPPY SATURDAY SHAREFEST!

Good luck with the wedding planning!! I know how difficult it is balancing everyone's family for the holidays (between my parents being divorced and my boyfriend's family...it's stressful to fit everything in!).

Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest!

Aww, hang in there! Your families sound similar to ours. At least you will get some good food out of it!

Holidays are always stressful and don't always bring the best out in others ;) lol...
You will have a great time.. just breath, and go in with a positive mind set and you should be good to go.

I look forward to the holidays...it's never a stressful time...maybe chaotic, but not stressful. Most of our family lives pretty local and so holidays are a big done up deal...but only for about 4 or 5 hours...then we all go home. Since you are traveling, I'm sure it's harder to not be able to just go home and calm down...so try to get some time in together where it's quiet on some of the crazier days.

And as far as the wedding talk...just smile and tell them all how excited you'll be to be back with them in that glorious place and that you'll have lots to 'surprise' them with. The more I use the word 'surprise' the less I have to tell them (or talk to them) about the wedding plans. :)

Have a great trip and safe travels!

I feel your pain. We travel to NC every Christmas for a week and it is the most stressful trip. As fun and exciting as it is, having to visit 4 different houses in 7 days is exhausting.

Mr. Milk - I love that you blog on here on Fridays! Christmas similarly does the same for me - I get all kinds of excited for the little Christmas things and then *poof* it disappears as soon as I'm running around on Christmas Eve/Day. It's terrible! But you know what? It'll be okay! I promise!

Ooh! I feel you! My family is Albanian & Greek - and even though our wedding already happened, without fail whenever we go home for the holidays everyone needs to know all our business all.the.time. I suspect though that this happens to everyone regardless of nationality. We are all so happy to see each other! And need a vacation the minute we get back.
